Ospreys, historically known as sea hawks, river hawk, and fish hawks, are diurnal, fish-eating birds of prey with a cosmopolitan range.
Ospreys are large raptors, reaching more than 60 cm in length and a wingspan of 180 cm. It is brown on the upperparts and predominantly greyish on the head and underparts. While people often call it a “fish hawk” or “seahawk,” it belongs to its own unique scientific family (Pandionidae) and its own genus (Pandion), separate from true Hawks, Eagles, and Falcons.
