I really like the Algarve, it is a lovely holiday destination for Maureen and I, but it also offers opportunites for me to photograph wildlife.
For this holiday we rented an air BNB in Praia da Luz just outside Lagos. The main intention was to explore the western side of the area as most of our other holidays had been in the east.
One of the reasons for choosing to move further west was the opportunity to go on a pelagic cruise out of Sagres to the continental shelf (20 miles) to photograph sea birds that I had previously never had the chance to see before.
I say cruise but in realiity it was a fast (very fast) rib that streaked across the ocean and was frankly very uncomfortable.
This though proved to be very much the wildlife highlight of the holiday with mainly Storm Petrels, Cory’s Shearwaters, Whales and Dolphins but it was more than enough to whet my appetite and resolve to go again in the future.
It is fair to say that the eastern side offers more variety of birdlife but as the whole area is really not that big it was no hardship to travel anywhere. We also met up with old friends Peter and Sam Cargill who moved out to the Algarve a few years ago
