A short 5 day trip to Northern Greece to photograph Dalmatian Pelicans, in their breeding finery.
Lake Kerkini in Northern Greece is close to Bulgaria and North Macedonia and is a premier global destination for Dalmatian Pelicans, the world’s largest pelican species. The lake spans roughly 72 square kilometers, offering shallow waters and rich fish stocks that sustain a thriving resident and migratory bird population.
I flew to Sofia in Bulgaria where I was met by my guide Emil Enchev. Along with 4 other photographers we journeyd by car to Kerkini and our hotel home for the trip. The food in the village was 1st class as was the organisation which consisted mainly of boat tips on the lake taking a variety of different photography formats – Hi key, slow shutter, video, flight, sunrise, silhouettes etc etc.
It was a very intensive trip with only a couple of excursions around the lake by car to offer anything different, not that we minded as the challenges of learning new methods kept us all very focussed.
After 4 days we travelled back to Sofia and spend the last afternoon and the final morning photographing Nutcrackers in the snow near a ski resort outside the city before departing. A very worthwhile trip.
