Following research on the internet I decided to visit Hides de Monegros which is in a semi desert region not far from the lovely city of Zaragoza.
I flew to Madrid and then took a train to Zaragoza where I was me to by Erika – Borjas partner who drove me to the small town of Monegrillo where I stayed in an apartment which I shared with Milos Rudka a German Doctor and fellow photographer.
The set up is very intriguing and innovative – Borja or Erika met us each morning and evening in Farlette about 10 kms away. Their first duty was to fill a bowser on the trailer of each car with water for the drinking pools before driving into the desert where each hide is situated.
1000 lites of water costs 1 euro. The pools were refilled daily to provide water (and photography opportunites for us) for the local wildlife.
There was very little food put out as drinking water was the main thing that attracted the birds to the vicinity of the hides. You could describe them as a number of little oases in a very arid landscape.
With some of the hides inactive there was certain amount of revisits to the hides that were, and consequently in hindsight the trip could have been 3 or so days shorter than the 10 days. Before leaving to fly home I stayed over night in Zaragoza.
